ANTECEDENTS OF OUTWARD FDI IN EMERGING ECONOMIES: THE ROLE OF GOVERNMENT INVOLVEMENT

Coauthored with Chengqi Wang, Mario Kafouros, and Mike Wright

Abstract:

Integrating theoretical insights from institution and resource-based views of the firm, we examine how emerging-market firms exploit home-country institutional advantages to overcome resource constraints and succeed in expanding their operations abroad. In contrast to prior research, we examine the extent to which variations in government involvement impacts the ability of firms to conduct FDI. Using a large firm-level dataset of Chinese companies, we provide evidence that government involvement has a direct effect on international expansion and also drives international expansion indirectly by enabling firms to deploy resources more efficiently. Hence, instead of simply viewing outward FDI as the result of advantageous resource positions, this approach emphasizes the role of government involvement and how this interacts with internal resources to shape internationalization outcomes.
