Abstract
CIOs′ leadership effectiveness has been increasingly recognized as a key strategic resource in information system implementation. Our studies focus on motivating CIOs′ social network to acquire leadership effectiveness in IT context. We analyze the nature, structure and process of CIOs′ social network development that occurs during the IT application efforts. Based on our analysis, a tentative theoretical framework of CIOs′ capabilities to motivate social network to get effective leadership is proposed. Applying the methodology included Social Network Analysis to map communication flows between CIOs and members within their social networks, we find that constructing effective CIOs′ leadership requires the development of their personal capabilities and improvement of their leadership styles, and the relational and structural properties of CIOs′ social networks influence their personal capabilities and leadership styles. An empirical study is designed to identify the CIOs′ critical capabilities and appropriate leadership styles within the expanding social network towards getting the most effective CIOs′ leadership.
