Abstract:The relationship between IT investment and firm performance has been a hot topic in recent years. This study discusses and empirically tests the effects of institutions and social networks on the impact of IT investment on firm performance with the sample consisting of top 500 listed Chinese corporations in 2009. Our findings indicate that IT software investment could improve firm performance, and institutions positively moderate the relationship between IT hardware investment or IT total investment and firm performance, and social networks further positively moderate the effect of institutions on the relationship between IT hardware investment or IT total investment and firm performance for firms located in coastal area. The study extends the framework that shows the relationship between IT investment and firm performance.
