Speaker: David GOMULYA,Singapore Management University

Location: Room 214, Guanghua Building 2
Abstract:
Firms seek to repair reputational damage due to financial misrepresentation by replacing their CEO. However, this assumes such firms have not only the intention but also the ability – an assumption yet to be empirically examined. We address this paucity by examining how tainted firm and its leaders affect its ability to recruit successor CEOs. Using matched sample, we find that while high-status of tainted firm increases the likelihood that high-status successor CEOs are recruited, high-status of outgoing CEOs decreases this likelihood, and board status has no effect. Our results highlight a key challenge. While stakeholders expect tainted firms to replace their CEOs, doing so may make it more challenging to recruit high-status successor CEOs better positioned to repair the damaged reputation.
