Abstract:With the advent of the Internet and advances in information technology and logistics, retail internationalization has taken a new form, with domestic retailers selling products beyond their previous limited territories to international consumers. This trend of retail internationalization could impair manufacturers’ profit when great disparity of willingness-to-pay exists among different markets. Facing this challenge, manufacturers may pursue differentiated strategies in branding and service provision. By implementing properly combined strategies, manufacturers can reduce retailers’ incentive to offer global shipping or mitigate the damage of retail internationalization. This paper considers a two-level supply chain where a manufacturer is the Stackleberg leader and two retailers determine quantities to maximize profits. Numerical analysis shows the improvement of manufacturer’s profit after implementing the combined strategies.
