Statistics Seminar(2014-01)
Topic:Data mining and business analytics with big and small data
Speaker:Johannes Ledolter, University of Iowa
Time:Monday, 23 March, 14:30-16:00
Location:Room 217, Guanghua Building 2
Abstract:In this talk I review useful methods for data mining and business analytics and I describe several applications and case studies where these methods prove useful. But data mining of big “happenstance” data sets may not provide helpful clues as the analyst has a limited role in the data acquisition, and I discuss the importance of collecting data through carefully designed statistical experiments. I also comment on recent degree program initiatives in Business Analytics which combine training in statistics, computer science and machine learning, and target areas of application.
