Topic: Economic Trade and Transboundary Air Pollution

Abstract:
Transboundary air pollution due to atmospheric transport processes has been well recognized as a critical challenge for regional and local air quality. Much less known is transfer of air pollutants associated with the economic trade. Trade allows for separation of regions producing goods and services from those consuming the products. This means that production of goods and associated emissions are relocated from consuming- to producing- regions. Such relocation leads to drastic redistribution of air pollution at the local, regional and global scales. And subsequent atmospheric transport further adjusts the spatial patterns of pollutants. In this study, we will demonstrate how trade and atmospheric transport has affected transboundary air pollution and impacted human health and climate. Selected examples include inter-provincial and international trade of China. Solving global pollution problems will benefit from comprehensive thinking accounting for transboundary pollution associated with trade and atmospheric transport.

Dr. Jintai Lin is a 'Bai Ren' Professor and an Associate Professor with Tenure at Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, School of Physics, Peking University. He current research are Global Atmospheric Environment and Human Impacts.
