Abstract:
We investigate the impact of education on the incidence of diseases. using a compulsory education law change in Taiwan for identification. What is unique about our study is our use of records of physician diagnoses to measure an individual’s health status. We use population data from the 2001–2010 National Health Insurance Research Database and the 2000 Population Census of Taiwan. The empirical results suggest that education lowers the risks of some cardiovascular diseases (e.g., high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, and stroke), neurological disorders (i.e., dementia), and chronic diseases (e.g., type 2 diabetes, liver cirrhosis, and arthritis). The effects are heterogeneous across genders.
